Clarity Before Countries

Stop Asking “Where Should I Move?”

Start Asking This Instead.

When people find out I’ve moved more than 30 times, I have lived in Japan, Italy, Germany, Albania, Poland, Thailand and more…….the first thing they ask is:

“Okay… so where should I move?”

And while I understand wanting to get straight to it. It’s definitely more complicated than that. Rather it’s question better met with more questions rather than a direct answer. After decades of relocating, I can tell you something with complete certainty:

“Where” is almost never the first real question. (unless you are given specific military orders). The real first questions are ………. deeper than that. You will need to start by seeking clarity and I will walk you through it in my Clarity before Countries Guide

When You’re Asking “Where,” You’re Usually Feeling Something Else

When people start thinking about leaving the U.S., they’re often carrying something heavy:

Burnout.
Disappointment.
Restlessness.
A sense that something is complete.
A desire for more freedom.
A need for safety or simplicity.

So they open a laptop or pull out their phone and type:
“Best countries to move to in 2026.”

It feels productive. But underneath that search is usually one of these:

  • Where will my money last?

  • Where won’t I regret it?

  • Where will I belong?

  • Where will this finally feel easier?

  • Where will I feel safe?

That’s not a geography question. That’s a clarity question.

The Hard Truth About Choosing a Country First

I’ve lived in places that were beautiful but wrong for that season of my life. I’ve lived in places that looked perfect on paper but didn’t support what my nervous system needed. And I’ve lived in places that weren’t trendy at all, but fit my life at that moment. I have learned that following what others are doing or trusting what I read in expat groups doesn’t always lead me to the location I need right now. For me. For my lifestyle and next step.

When you start with “where,” you risk choosing:

  • Based on cost alone

  • Based on other people’s YouTube videos

  • Based on escape energy

  • Based on urgency

  • Based on someone else’s version of freedom

And then you get there and realize… the lifestyle the others’ were describing was only what I thought I wanted, but not really the one for me. For my circumstances. For my current needs. For me to thrive.

It’s not about the country. It’s about the life you’re building inside it.

Instead of starting with “Where should I move?”, try shifting the question inward. Ask yourself, What kind of life am I actually trying to build and what do I need in order to feel stable inside it? That shift might seem small, but it changes the entire process. When you focus on the life first rather tha location you begin defining your non-negotiables, understanding what your nervous system truly needs to feel calm, getting honest about your financial reality. You can consider healthcare or personal responsibilities and clarifying the pace of life that would actually support you.

Once those pieces are clear, the world doesn’t feel so overwhelming. The endless list of countries naturally narrows. Instead of chasing trends or reacting to urgency, you start identifying places that genuinely align with who you are and what this season of your life requires. That’s when the decision-making process becomes steadier and far less stressful.

Most People Don’t Need to focus a specific country yet. They need:

Clarity about whether they want a reset or reinvention.
Clarity about what safety actually means now.
Clarity about what “enough” looks like financially.
Clarity about how much change they can realistically hold.

That’s why I created the Clarity Before Countries Guide. Not as another checklist. But as a pause. A way to step out of comparison and into self-trust.

You Don’t Need to Find the “Perfect” Country

You need…. A decision framework you trust. A life design that fits your season.A move that supports who you’re becoming, not who you used to be. Remember. Location is the container. You are the foundation.
