I understand what you’re going through ….
After 16 years as a military civilian, I felt a deep pull toward something different—something freer, more flexible, and truly my own. I was ready to step away from structured assignments and predictable routines and finally design life on my own terms.
With my kids grown and building lives of their own, I realized it was my turn.
So in April 2022, I made the leap. I sold everything I owned, packed a couple of suitcases, and set off to live abroad without the safety net of U.S. military support. It was both thrilling and terrifying.
And let me tell you—I made plenty of mistakes along the way.
I had so many questions and so few clear answers:
❓ Where do I even begin?
❓ Which country should I start with?
❓ How do I handle visas, finances, and day-to-day life overseas without built-in support?
❓ How do I find connection and community in a brand-new place?
I chose Albania for a reason. It was safe, affordable, and welcoming. You can stay for a year without a visa, which gave me time to plan my next move stress-free. Within days, I met fellow expats, found a realtor, and started building a life from the ground up.
But here’s what I quickly realized: there’s a huge gap between dreaming about moving abroad and actually doing it. The internet is overflowing with generic tips and YouTube videos that tell you what’s possible, but not what’s right for you.
That’s why I created Next Chapter Nomads.
I help people just like you; retired military, single parents, entrepreneurs, and anyone ready for a fresh start, navigate this transition with confidence and clarity. I offer personalized, experience-based guidance to help you avoid the common pitfalls, plan smarter, and create a life abroad that truly fits you.
